Learn how to use a FRONT Harness. Let's get started!

How to easily put on FRONT Harness and adjust for a proper fit:

  1. Lay out the harness on the ground in front of the dog.
  2. Place the dog's left foot in the hole.
  3. Grab and clip the colored buckles around neck.
  4. Clip the black buckles on the belly of the harness.
Check the fit:

Adjust the straps around the neck and chest. Make sure not to constrict breathing. Two fingers should fit in-between straps.

Obtaining your dog's focus:

  • Use High-Value Treats to capture your dog's full attention.
  • Capture and control what your dog is looking at by using the treat with hand signal to get you eye contact.

Understanding Basic Leash Handling:

Start the walk
  • Hold the leash in same spot every time.
  • Stop, focus, reward.
  • The goal is to "walk with."  Not ahead or behind you.

Pivot Turn

  • Request your dog to "leave it, come" while turning away.
  • Front attachment allows you to physically communicate your intended direction.

Maintaining Proper Leash Technique

  • Requires consistency and practice.
  • Pivot on the outside (side of the dog) to turn dog around you.
  • Your dog is an extension of you.
  • Lead by example. Actions not just words.

Use what you've learned to curb and manage reactivity

  • Apply what you've practiced on a walk.
  • Keep enough distance to work within your dog's threshold.
  • Be patient and have fun. You'll progress faster by taking your time and doing in moderation.
