ABSOLUTELY. It’s the perfect tool for training. Your puppy is like a little wildling. You have to be able to protect and teach them . I can’t imagine NOT having one on a puppy! How do you control them otherwise? How do you correct them if you can’t grab them as they run from you thinking it’s a game! It can be concerning depending on where they’re running to. They’re little wiggle worms and I wouldn’t want to drop mine. It all comes down to management and training. While teaching your puppy, your words are meaningless unless you can act, and if you can't grab your puppy, you have no control.
With a few exceptions, most dogs will adapt well to wearing the right harness. Especially if the association with the harness is something positive. Harnesses have also been known to soothe them. Like wearing a little thunder shirt. Puppies can be taught to wear and walk with a harness practically from the start, as long as they are at least 8 weeks old. I just put a harness on a 3-month-old and he never once tried to bite it or had any difficulty walking with me from the get go! (No that is not always how easy it is) Everyone is different. They just need a teacher like we all do.
In addition to wearing that new harness, set up a daily schedule, start socialization, and work on alone time. Everything in moderation and patience!
A daily schedule will help your dog thrive significantly more. Plan your daily walks (if they’ve had all shots, otherwise carry them), playtime, workouts, naps, and meals.
Begin Socialization right away. A happy and confident dog is well - socialized. That doesn’t just mean you and your family, it means the world around us. Restaurants, busy streets, parks, people, dogs, children - everything! Signing up for lessons to work on social skills in a controlled environment is a fantastic idea. A good harness will help you through this journey.
